Mysterious Spots on Clothes After Wash and Dry

Submit an Entry: Your Laundry Questions and Answers

From Monika

My Laundry Question

When my laundry comes out of the dryer, it has little spots on it, like clear spots. I use pretreater on the spots but then they come up someplace else. I am wasting a lot of money on products and spending too much time doing the same laundry over and over again. Please help! This has been going on for years now. No one has an answer for me.

Share a Little Background Info

Out of the dryer. A bunch of different sizes of oily spots. Not an actual stain like a grass stain or chocolate stain but looks like water spots all over, front and back of all different types of garments and materials.

Lessons Learned

  • tried different detergents, no dryer sheets,no softeners

Mary Marlowe Leverette, Laundry Guide, says:

Since the "grease" stains come out when rewashed, my first thought is that they are being caused by a laundry product. Even though you don't use dryer sheets or softeners, let's review a couple of things.

  • If you have a detergent or fabric softener dispenser in your washer, it should be cleaned thoroughly. Heat one cup of white distilled vinegar to boiling, fill the dispensers and run a cycle in your washer - empty - using hot water. This will clean your washer of any detergent buildup.
  • Clean the interior of your dryer using warm distilled white vinegar and water. Wipe it down well, rinse and dry with a clean white cloth.
  • When you wash clothes, add the detergent first and let the washer fill half way with water before adding your clothes. NEVER pour detergent on top of your clothes and do not use too much detergent.
  • Add one cup white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle to help dissolve any detergent residue that has redeposited on your clothes.
  • To determine if your washer or dryer is loosing and spraying oil from the motor, remove the back of the washer and see if there is any spattering. If you see an oily spray, you have a mechanical problem.
  • You can also check if the problem is coming from the washer and dryer by washing a load and allowing it to air dry. If the spots appear, you have a water/washer/detergent problem. If they don't, it is a dryer problem. I hope these tips will help you determine the cause of your spots. You may also have a water quality issue that is causing laundry products to redeposit on your clothes. Have your water tested.
    Good luck!
